Once this fails, is that pretty much the last thing they can try until the relief well is finished?

no and thanks for being so optimistic. Next would be a cap or flange on the BOP, after that a BOP on top of the existing BOP, then they have the Top Hat, Junk Shot, etc.

I hope it works, but seems like if they actually thought it would work, they would have tried it earlier.
If the area wasn't so deep and divers could access it, would they have had this under control by now, or would they still be having the problems?

they really thought the big box plan (idk the real name) was gonna work which would eliminate the need for this
