I love WWII and have read most of the titles recommended here, good recs all around.

For me personally, though, I lean more towards the Pacific front than most. I find the Naval conflicts to be much more interesting than the primarily land-based European front.

If you want the most in-depth breakdown of the Battle of Midway as well as a really good comparison between the US and Japanese navies during WWII, read The Shattered Sword, it's fantastic.

And if you're interested in reading maybe the most incredible account of any conflict in recent memory, read The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors. You legit will think you're reading some fictional Hollywood screenplay.

Crossing the Line: Memoir of a Navy tailgunner who served aboard USS Enterprise. He later became dean of the Princeton graduate school so it's well written. Published in the sixties but still relevant.

Parachute Infantry. Written by a member of Easy Company and was part of the source material for BoB.

For straight history, The Pacific War by Costello and Eagle Against The Sun by Spector. The former from a British perspective which is rare for the Pacific Theatre. Also anything by Gordon Prange about Pearl Harbor or Midway.

Babi Yar by Kuznetzov is a first hand account of the Nazi occupation of Kiev written in novel form. considered the definitive Eastern Front novel of WWII.
