There was a big abstinence movement led mostly by Baptist churches in the 90s that popularized these purity pledges.

Ah OK. It just didn't seem to me these purity rings have been around long enough that the girl's who get them are now old enough for these rings to be an issues. I'm still having to get use to the idea that the little girl's of the 90's are now pretty much grown up.

Even then, only the extreme Westboro types would ever try to link it as a ticket to hell.

Sounds right. I grew up in the late 70's & early 80's as a Southern Baptist in rural Alabama. Yeah there was a lot of talk about going to hell, but it was always balanced out with the message of God being willing to forgive our sins.

I think there's a good chance you're correct.

10 is a little early for a purity pledge. Sounds like this girls issues go beyond virginity and into self esteem. Hers is so low that being a virgin was all she was good at.

It's not like she had five kids as a teenager though. There is some method to the "madness" sometimes.

I think she could be a lot worse off.

You don't need to sign a purity pledge when you look like that.

Have you ever heard of an agnostic atheist? It's who I am. It means you don't believe there is a god but you also don't make absolute that there isn't one. I can honestly say I hope there is a god.

Well, another stupid person signed up. Everyone say Hi to the stupid person.

You're an agnostic. Don't add atheist to it to seem hip or like you're part of some snazzy new group you made up.

Cool. There's one paragraph about a contradictory viewpoint on Wikipedia.

Atheism is the rejection of the idea of the existence of any deities. Agnosticism is the idea that it is impossible to know if deities exist, or that we have not found any evidence of them.

They're very nearly mutually exclusive.

I was a teenager in the 90's in a baptist church. Trust me, it was a hot topic. The whole "True Love Waits" movement was in full swing. They preached a lot of guilt. I went through some moral questions about it myself.

Didn't the Jonas Brothers make it a big deal again a few years ago?
