Holy shite. My little sister works for a pet boarding place in WM (not this one) and the owner lady always gets pissed at her cause she doesn't like to deal with the pits. If this had been my sister id be in jail by tonight.
I was told by a woman working for the animal shelter in Ponchatoula that were showing dogs they had for adoption. I said I didn't think they could put Pits up for adoption. She said all they have to do was say it was a mixed breed. All dogs are mixed breed.

Most homeowners insurance policies now exclude pit bulls from coverage under the policy. Some allow you to buy back coverage but you have to pay extra. Pits aren’t the only dogs, there are a few others, they’re deemed vicious
This is true, while shopping my homeowners policy I was surprised to find only 1 legit company that would cover me because of my "aggressive breed"

Money talks. Insurance companies assess risk too. Did you think for a moment that they track the history of claims for breeds of dogs and certain ones caused the most damage, costing them the most money?

I understand that insurance companies assess risk. I just don't consider GSDs in the same realm as a pit.

I have a mix that hell may have some pit in him (he has pointy ears and a boxy head so it could be a boxer or pit or tons of other breeds) but I always question these things for a couple of reasons:
Firs, the CDC says "There is currently no accurate way to identify the number of dogs of a particular breed, and consequently no measure to determine which breeds are more likely to bite or kill.” And while it’s anyone’s guess exactly how many pit bull type dogs there are in this country, it’s clear from looking around most cities, neighborhoods and shelters that dogs labeled as pit bulls are far more common than 5 percent."
From that, we all know the makeup of what a pure Pit looks like, but we have no idea for any of the mixes unless we know the mother/father. Are pits responsible for 50% of bites because they are 40% of the dog population and also when they bite it is publicized more due to their reputation, or are they closer to 10%?
Second, The CDC report also discusses this: “[B]reeds responsible for DBRF (dog related fatalities) have varied over time. … As ascertained from our data, between 1979 and 1980, Great Danes caused the most reported human DBRF. … [S]ince 1975, dogs belonging to more than 30 breeds have been responsible for fatal attacks on people, including Dachshunds, a Yorkshire Terrier, and a Labrador Retriever.”
From personal experience we had a Great Dane when I was young who seemingly went of the rails similar to some of these pit stories. Those dogs are large and scary for sure, and the one we had bit my older brother once when he was like 9-10, so that was the end of him.
I am kind of torn on this, as I would like to believe all dogs can be trained well to behave well, but I also understand people who say "why allow dogs that are bigger faster and stronger than all the rest to be house pets"

Well, there's no such thing as a "pure pit", according to many here and other sites. But I agree that we all know what a pit bull looks like.

Pits are not anywhere close to 40% of the dog population, baw. A quick google search shows 6%.

It's publicized because they actually kill or seriously maim people. If any dog, no matter the breed, kills someone, it's going to make the news.

Right 6% are pure pits then, but what additional percent are "mutts" that have some pit in them? Another 6% or 20%? we don't know that
