Why do posters use the OT to air their dirty laundry?

Maybe it's hard to get unbiased opinions from people who know you.
Although, at the same time, it's hard to get serious responses on here.

That's one of the main reasons. I don't think many use this site for real life advice, but generally comedic hilarity ensues from serious situations.

I agree that it's a little bit of both of these things. I think there is a line because like the OP said the OT detectives are good. I would never post anything that could give up any privacy for myself or others, but I am fine with asking for advice on topics of real life events that couldn't trace back to anyone.
ETA: I'll probably post one tomorrow about a conundrum I have.

The OT gives a place for posters to vent and let it out or seek advice without people knowing their identity.
