This.
The 101st Airborne, whether they want to admit it or not, owes their survival to Patton and his 3rd Army breaking off contact with the enemy and advancing rapidly to their aid at Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge.

Some quotes by US Army generals on the USMC
quote:
The safest place in Korea was right behind a platoon of Marines. Lord, how they could fight! [MGen. Frank E. Lowe, USA; Korea, 26 January
quote:
Why in hell can't the Army do it if the Marines can. They are the same kind of men; why can't they be like Marines. [Gen. John J. "Black Jack" Pershing, USA; 12 February 1918]
quote:
I have just returned from visiting the Marines at the front, and there is not a finer fighting organization in the world! [Gen. Douglas MacArthur, USA; Korea, 21 September 1950]
quote:
We have two companies of Marines running rampant all over the northern half of this island, and three Army regiments pinned down in the southwestern corner, doing nothing. What the hell is going on? [Gen. John W. Vessey Jr., USA, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; during the assault on Grenada, 1983]
No way I'm leaving this buried at the bottom of the page.

While there have been engagements where some USMC commanders have been successful in being flexible and adaptable, the nature of the force and their traditional mission simply don't encourage or value this. I admire their fighting spirit and ability to stay with an aggressive assault, but that is their mindset: the USN values their capital ships and the longer they have to stay to support an amphibious assault, the more they are at risk. That mindset percolates down to the USMC who feel they must secure the objectives - not in a foolhardy way - but at a brisk pace, relatively unconcerned with a higher casualty rate.
So, while I have no problems with marines leading an assault, I do not want to be in a rear area for which they're responsible for the defensive perimeter. Just the facts, folks.

That was probably the third day of the invasion when resistance in the U.S. Army sector had completely collapsed and they had absolutely no one left to fight. The Marines were going from village to village looking for a fight but couldn't find one because everyone had either been killed, surrendered, or gone home.

One of the things drilled into your brain at boot camp is that mission accomplishment takes precedence to troop welfare.

Yes it seems like Ike either had an awakening of sorts or else his luck just turned, which either way is a pretty motivational story for anyone kind of stuck in their place in life and wanting more. He clearly was shrewd enough to establish some very beneficial contacts and work them to his advantage.
