Well you probably knew you weren't going to eat long before you went. You would have made it much less awkward if you had simply said something ahead of time like... "I'm not really hungry, but I'd still love to go and hang out with you guys."

If money is the issue and you're not just a cheap bastard, guilt someone into offering to pay for you if they are concerned about you not eating. It would still work even if you were a cheap bastard.
