what a krewe is and the difference between parades
A krewe is the group that forms the parade.
Some parades are better than others.
I only go to parades from Weds. before Mardi Gras through Mardi Gras day, on the St. Charles Avenue route, with the exception of Endymion.

Can I get a cliff's notes on what a krewe is and the difference between parades
Some parades are small and crappy, others have seemingly a billion members and have celebrities riding, while others are composed of old money and ride only out of tradition. Generally the quality of the parade depends on the amount of money behind it. The bigger parades are generally the most fun and popular and feature extravagant floats. Some of the older parades put a lot of time and care into the floats and parade theme but can be stiff. Others are an excuse for people to ride and get shithoused. The ones struggling for membership are noticeably weaker.
