Tour the Historic Gardere area.
François GARDERE

A businessman, plantation owner and politician. Born, Bordeaux, France, June 21, 1792. Emigrated to the United States with his father in 1806.

Located in Baton Rouge; selectman of its town council, 1822-1823; active in the civic life of the town and was a leader in the movement to establish the Baton Rouge College which was opened in 1822. Served as state treasurer of Louisiana from 1828 to 1843

In 1866, he bought Chatsworth Plantation, apparently at a tax sale, located at Manchac, La., on the east bank of the Mississippi River, just below "Baton Rouge" which is now South of the downtown area.

Chatsworth for many years produced large crops of sugar cane

Day and night tours are offered. Many visitors prefer the night tours due to the ambience of the Mississippi River and the historical setting. Admission is free.
