I may check it out tomorrow.
I don't believe in a heaven or a hell. If I'm going to the same Hell as Hitler because I like to catch a buzz, have sex outside of wedlock (although I have been faithful to the same woman for nearly 15 years...longer than most marriages) and don't want to try and guess which religion is the winning ticket, then I never really had a chance anyway.
I worked with a guy from India who was Hindu and one of the single best people I have ever met, one set of grandparents went to one protestant church and the other another, yet all were good as gold, but yet some or all of them will be in the same Hell as pedophiles, mass murders or people like Hitler? Just doesn't seem to make a lot of sense and is a rigged game.
I think most people are like my SO and want to believe there is a heaven so that we can see our loved ones that have passed away again.

Ah, I didn't think about it that way. Yeah I guess he's right, I mean I hope I accomplish so much in my life the whole world grieves my death. Is that likely, heck no but a guy has to dream.

I'm 100% with you.

Still there, and I sort of talked about that in the thread. Like an idiot, I still believe with no doubt.

It came out of nowhere really. Just gave my old stoner self a high 5 for that one.

You bring up some great points, the things we may do in life are minuscule to the travesties of others. Yet we are all judged the same way in some religions eyes. That's why I no longer believe in a certain religion, God never wanted religion. All religion has done in this world is start wars and divide us.

Wanna think about something that will really blow your mind? Nick Bostrom wrote a paper that argues the following conclusion:
quote:
A technologically mature “posthuman” civilization would have enormous computing power. Based on this empirical fact, the simulation argument shows that at least one of the following propositions is true: (1) The fraction of human-level civilizations that reach a posthuman stage is very close to zero; (2) The fraction of posthuman civilizations that are interested in running ancestor-simulations is very close to zero; (3) The fraction of all people with our kind of experiences that are living in a simulation is very close to one.
If (1) is true, then we will almost certainly go extinct before reaching posthumanity. If (2) is true, then there must be a strong convergence among the courses of advanced civilizations so that virtually none contains any relatively wealthy individuals who desire to run ancestor-simulations and are free to do so. If (3) is true, then we almost certainly live in a simulation. In the dark forest of our current ignorance, it seems sensible to apportion one’s credence roughly evenly between (1), (2), and (3).
Unless we are now living in a simulation, our descendants will almost certainly never run an ancestor-simulation.

You're a thinker, baw. I've seent it. Always gotta watch the quiet ones.

I don't even know what to think about that.

I tend to want to believe when we die we do like in the movie Highlander, at the end, just become one with the universe.
I will prob check the thread out tomorrow. I am reading/posting with one eye closed already.

And this certainly makes arguing for agnosticism difficult for someone like myself. It seems to me though that this belief may actually harm us, despite appearing to be innocuous. If you hold the belief that you will most certainly see your loved ones again after they pass, are you really coming to terms with their passing?

I would say no, but at the same time that would contridict with your beliefs.

What do you mean by simulation? Like a game?
Posted on 8/31/16 at 1:42 am to Heathens
Well, sort of. The Sims game might be a reasonable analogy. Musk (and to some extent, Bostrom) believe that our universe may very well be a computer simulation of a universe.
Posted on 8/31/16 at 1:43 am to rbWarEagle
I can't even wrap my head around that. It must be bedtime.
Posted on 8/31/16 at 1:43 am to rbWarEagle

Oh my a simulation inside of a simulation.

I say absolutely yes, relatively speaking. If you truly believe, than it would seem easier to "handle" the passing.

Ahh, but that's sort of my point. Making it "easier to handle" may be undercutting the emotional salience of the event*, meaning that you may not grow as much as you could from the depth of the experience.
*Granted, some people may not be able to handle the trauma of death without an afterlife and engage in self-destructive behavior. However, it doesn't necessarily follow that an afterlife must exist given the possibility of not being able to handle it.

And God said "Let there be light and there was light"
