Since you specifically said "novella," I'm going to recommend Ayn Rand's Anthem.

I don't know who wrote it, but I read a short story sci fi in my LSU science fiction English class... It was called "Cold Equation". Find it online and read it while you decide on what novel to read.
quote:

"The Cold Equations" is a science fiction short story by Tom Godwin, first published in Astounding Magazine in 1954. In 1970, the Science Fiction Writers of America selected it as one of the best science-fiction short stories published before 1965, and it was therefore included in The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Volume One, 1929–1964.
in 1955 the great radio series X Minus 1 produced an adaptation of the story, which you can listen to here

The Foundation Trilogy, 1984, the Dark Tower Series and Ender's Game have to be on your list of must read sci-fi novels.

Short story: The Last question - Asimov

Novels:

The Magus
Slaughterhouse 5
Cat's Cradle

Americana, ah frick it it's not scifi but it's a great novel: East of Eden

Those are about the best recommendations I could ever give a person interested in reading.

Not really scifi, but the made up genre anyway - the Zombie Fallout series by Mark Tufo is unbeatable, as is his Lycan Fallout. His Indian Hill series is scifi and is awesome, too.
