She was chosen as the liason with him because she knew both languages and could teach him the native language. Thus they spent a lot of time together. Thus they developed a relationship.

Right. That was big part of the plot. That's why she was trying to kill herself when Costner found her. That's also why Kicking Bird released her from mourning when he realized that something was developing between her and the Costner character.
