Burnt hair at first then it depends on the person's ethnicity.

In India, the smell of a burning body would not be noticeable.

Here it would smell pretty bad, except crematoriums use high heat natural gas and proper air venting to minimize the smell.

People roasted do not smell like a barbecue. The scent lingers in the back of your sinuses.

It’s nasty and unmistakable. No way most of Germany non-combatants did not know wtf the smell was in their country.

ETA: Source - Grew up in a funeral home family. Crematories have special filters, as well.

That was a great documentary. I was rooting for the guru people for about half the movie until Sheila went all you can eat buffet on them.
