Must have been crazy loud in the cockpit with the engine under the pilot

Engine was below and behind. The intake ran under the cockpit

Great job Darth !

Had a QF-86 Sabre crash at Tyndall AFB while I was stationed there. Had done a flightline job on a transient F-4 parked a few spots down from it on the ramp and got a really good look at it a few days before it went down…. absolutely gorgeous bird.
They used it over the gulf to tow gunnery drones for gunnery practice.

On take off the pilot ( civvy/ prior USAF) had an engine failure IIRC. Stayed with the a/c till the last few seconds applying rudder to keep the Sabre from hitting a newly opened condominium complex right in line with the failing a/c. Got his knee/leg busted up pretty bad due to holding rudder down as he ejected but saved who knows how many lives with his efforts.
Tail of bird was still sticking out of the bay as I drove home that day after shift…they recovered it but don’t know if it was salvageable.

Edit- looked for reports on the crash but couldn’t find any. Happened in either ‘85 or early ‘86.

Personally never thought it was very wise decision to put a condo that close to the end of a military runway

Thanks. This one gave me some trouble, which Academy kits can do sometimes. Still, I’m overall pleased at how she came out.

You should be very pleased. The model is very nicely done and looks great.

Great job! What paints did you use?

Thanks. For the overall body of the plane, I used Tamiya acrylic flat aluminum mixed with chrome silver 2:1. On the MG firing ports, I used Tamiya acrylic Gun Metal.

This kit came with the option of having the tail section removed to show the engine. It even had a little stand cart like the ground crew would use when removing the tail to access the engine. I didn’t want to cut such a beautiful plane in half, so I built it intact.

Can the engine be built separate? Or is the exhaust part of the main assembly?

I know the feeling on cutting kits. I really want to do a diorama of having a bird worked on, but I don't want to cut a kit to put an engine in.
