What's sad is 75% of these workers want to be working but have to follow the shepherd. No work, no pay except for the $26 per day they get from the Union during the strike.

Anyone think this is a play to push oil prices back up ?
What does refining have to do with raw material cost of oil?

Reading all of this art work... I'm staff we had to come in at 8:00 pm with three weeks worth of clothes and personal items. Hopefully we will hear something by 11:30 pm.

To be fair a large number of their membership is also.

President of the USW makes $217k per year. Wonder if he ceases his pay during the strike ?

The union members are asking for these things because the leadership tells them they deserve it and can get it. If you talked to any of those guys before the union mgmt got to them they would take a 3% raise and more typical insurance and OT rates.
Do you walk into a car negotiation and accept the first offer or tell them exactly what you are willing to pay for a new car?
Hell no, it would be bad negotiating.

Now imagine being a salaried employee crossing the picket lines and being viewed as the person who is taking their job.
Would do it with a smile on my face everyday.

No. but to be taken seriously, you can't offer half of the asking price, nor can you reasonably ask for twice the book value.

I understand negotiations. Been through four since I started working in my current job. Two of those were with USW as our affiliation. I can honestly say that we had better contracts when we were affiliated with anyone other than them.

Yes Mr. Salesman... I would like to buy that 2015 Tahoe on your lot with cash and I'm only paying you $25,000 for it... and I'm going to pay you in nickels.

Forgive my cluelessness, as I have only worked briefly at one plant that was non-union, but what legally stops an employer from just cleaning house and hiring non-union employees, hypothetically?
I mean, I understand logistically it's not possible, but aside from that.

Agree. One side low balls, one side highballs. It gets worked out.

Nothing. Can and has been done. There would be lawsuits and all.
Biggest problem is hoping enough experience crosses the line to work.

Right, obviously if there are enough union employees you can't afford to lose the millions/day while you wait to fill empty spots with people who don't need training, nor afford to train new employees for months while units are shut down.
Was just curious of the legalities is all.

Low oil prices are not good for Louisiana. smh at those celebrating it. Sasol just delayed progress on their GTL plant by Lake Chuck because of them. Bunch of potential jobs there not coming to fruition.
it's damn good for the rest of us. sorry i don't care about the oil field trash and their big fricking trucks

no much, if any, oil field trash is involved with this negotiation.
