Just curious, what is so weird about it? He chose to do something unique for a good cause to raise money…people want to give for a good cause and it’s a unique way to give.

It's kind of manipulative/self-aggrandizing. "I won't sleep until you meet my demands!"

Many people are either going to give because they are worried for his health/safety, or they are going to tune in and not give because they want to see how long he can go.

if some random dude was just asking for charity, it wouldn’t bring near as much awareness to the cause.

He pretty much is some random dude.

He's not saying, "If you all give $1M, I'll do something really difficult, cool, and impressive." He's saying, "If you all give $1M, I'll go to bed."

You appear to be missing some info. Tom set-up 7 step-goals throughout the fundraiser:
From $0 to $100K - Tom promised he would not sleep until he hit $100K. As it turned out this one was easily breached as $100K in donations was reached only 2 hours and 13 minutes from the start of the live stream. Therefore, Tom increased the upper end to $200K. He slept after that for about 7 hours a night up until the last night.
$250K - At $250K Tom - a former high school History teacher - gave a lecture on his favorite period in History: "Post-WWI Europe and the Changes that war brought to everyday lives in Europe." This lecture ended up being about 2:40 long (NEVER get a teacher started on their favorite subject!) and is clipped and saved to his YT channel.
$400K to $500K - Tom promised he would do the entire span of $400K to $500K as his character creation for the Washington Commanders, "Wildflower". As it turned out, Tom couldn't maintain his stoner voice for that long as his voice was getting shredded.
$500K HOT ONES - Tom got the Hot Ones 10-pack and agreed to douse his vegan chicken wing substitutes with each of the 10 hot sauces. Questions were provided by his friend in Colorado and co-host of the GPS podcast, Brandon Perna. While the segment was funny, what was funnier was the next day after he returned from the bathroom and looked like he had just experienced WWI trench warfare in person.
$600K 1-Hour Darkness Retreat - In the past Tom has poked fun at NFL Quarterback Aaron Rogers' trip to a "Darkness Retreat". He recreated the stunt here, promising a "Tom Grossi Original" drawing of whatever a $1,000 donation donor wanted. The catch? Tom was blindfolded and didn't know what color crayons he was using.
$750K The "Auction" of a piece of the Berlin Wall and a bit of barbed wire from the wall. A family that had been in West Berlin at the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall had helped themselves to quite a few small pieces from the wall's rubble. When they heard of Tom's fundraiser, they sent a small piece along with a piece of barbed wire for Tom to "Auction". It wasn't a real auction and it was made clear that these were donations and would not be returned. The winner of the "auction" would be the one with the highest single donation (they couldn't combine them).
$850K to $1,000K No Sleep Until The Goal Is Reached - this was originally supposed to start at $900K, but the rate of donations started picking up and I guess Tom was feeling like a "Tush Push" over the goal line was necessary, so he started the last goal early. The goal was actually reached 24 hours after he last woke up, so he was no worse than any college student pulling an all-nighter cramming. Can anyone here relate?

Why aren't his streams monetized? I thought you only needed 1k subs to start making money on YouTube.

If you set a live stream up as a fund raiser for a charity, ads should be disabled and any money coming in is allocated to the charity. Tom's non-charity live streams and videos are monetized. As of last night, Tom's YT channel had over 819,000 subscribers.
