Germans lost around 80% of their soldiers on the Eastern front. They were done before D-day even began.

This isn't an ahistorical assumption by any stretch of the imagination. Many military leaders within the German high command saw ultimate defeat staring them in the face as early as the autumn of 1941. After the surrender of Stalingrad and the failed counteroffensive at Kursk in 1943, even Hitler knew the war could not be won and that Germany's only hope was a separate peace with the Allies at Russia's expense.

However, Stalin was one paranoid customer and if it looked like the Allies were wavering from their support of total victory, he wouldn't have given a second's hesitation of making his own separate peace with Hitler. D-Day needed to happen and it needed to succeed in order to ensure total German defeat. Stalin had even delayed the start date of his promised summer offensive until after it looked as if the Allies were there to stay in France.
