am retired air force 'mustang' officer. Went in out of high school at 17 and worked my way up to become and officer after finishing college at night. All I can say to you is it was easily the best times of my life and I miss it to this day after retiring 18 years ago
Thank you, sir!
My wife is also a mustang. Spent seven years as enlisted (corpsman) before going to school for nursing and then was commissioned after Officer School in Rhode Island. She currently is a Commander with 22 years in the good ole Navy. As I said before, my time is done and she retires in DEC 2017. We will also agree that it has been the best times of our lives. The military community is outstanding and wouldn't trade if for any civilian, period.
And yes, it is true, on top of the military role, you get to see and do so much more than you ever would have in the civilian world - not talking about work related stuff, either. For example, we have been fortunate enough to have most duty stations on the Eastern seaboard with the exception of San Diego and an overseas billet, too. Where else do you get to visit and spend time at all these places?

If you sign up for 4 years, once you complete tech school you will enter the Air Force as an E-2. If you sign up for 6 years, upon graduation of tech school you will be an E-3.

Similar in the Navy except it ranges from E-2/E-5

Nuc school gives the best advancement and even then you only get promoted to E-4 after 2 years of school. E-5 came with STAR re-enlisting or was pretty much guaranteed for the MMs and ETs a year into the fleet, but certainly not immediately after schooling. What rating gave out E-5 immediately after school?
Now for the Navy hating, non re-enlisting nuc submarine qualed EMs, E-5 was a pipe dream till 4 years in at the earliest
ETA: this reply is referring to advancement to E-5 following school in the Navy as grammar mentioned.

I grabbed E-4 after 18 months of school (non nuc.)..Reported to my ship, and grabbed E-5 after time in rate...I had never taken a test until going for PO1..
Some special programs give you automatic advancement also.

Big deal... I made E-4 three times.

Must have been Army. I've met quite a few gray-haired E-4's working with the LA Army National Guard. When I asked them about it they just laughed and said they had been busted down in rank many times. Basically if you hadn't been busted down at least once you ain't trying.

I will never have gold stipes, but I was never stripped of rank

Took me about 7 years to get my first Good Conduct Medal.
Oh well... I like to party.

So for the programs like nuke school, do they take anyone with a high enough ASVAB or is it people that have experience in engineering?

It's all about that ASVAB.
True story: there was a guy on my first boat that had a degree and worked in nuclear engineering before joining the navy. When he joined he was past the age cutoff for the navy nuc program so he ended up becoming a Nav ET.
The younger nucs would go to this guy and ask him questions and he would read reactor plant manuals for fun... but the navy said he was too old to go to navy nuc school.

Nuke school is def all about the ASVAB. It seems that sometimes there is a disqualifier for common sense.
I served with some of the most idiotic people you can imagine. But hey, they followed instructions and could memorize hundreds of pages of manuals and procedures.
FWIW I'm a former nuc electrician.

I went to nuc MM school, hated it, got them to let me go conventional MM. Best decision I could have made.
