I certainly enjoyed my experiences firing the Maw Deuce .50 cal down range.

What's happening in this picture is that as each of the new SS standards are brought to him, Hitler touches the old Blutfahne to the new flag as a sort of consecration ceremony.

And, remember, these guys are swearing an oath of personal loyalty to one Adolf Hitler, not to Germany itself.

That "oath" issue is not as huge as one might think. During Germany's Imperial Days, they took an oath to obey the Kaiser.

All that happened with the Nazis is that they replaced "Kaiser" with "Adolf Hitler." They never took an oath to "Germany" at any time in German history at that point.

Well, your point is still important, because you emphasize the point that the German people and the German military at that point in history were steeped in authoritarian rule. It was in their DNA at that point, because they had always been ruled by an Emperor, a King or a Fuhrer, except for the short lived Weimar Republic. The idea that Germany herself needed to be served above and beyond service to the King or to the Fuhrer was not fully embedded in the fabric of the German psyche at that time.

This is why the idea of assassinating Hitler in order to save Germany was an extremely tough choice for all of the German officer corps. The younger officers took an oath to be loyal to Hitler. The old guys around from back in the Kaiser days took an oath to be loyal to the Kaiser and then, in 1935, an oath to be loyal to Hitler.

Our experience here in the USA was totally different. WE had the Constitution to preserve, not a King or Fuhrer. That's why it's so important for We the People to protect and serve the Constitution, and not some charismatic Party Leader who operates to do harm to the Constitution.
