On April 27, 1805, U.S. Marines launched a daring raid on the shores of Derna, which was part of Tripoli in North Africa. This event is notably recalled in the first verse of the Marines’ Hymn: “From the Halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli, we fight our country’s battles in the air, on land, and sea” 1. The Battle of Derna marked the U.S. Marines’ first battle and the raising of the U.S. flag on foreign soil. Led by Lieutenant Presley O’Bannon, a force of about 400 men landed at Derna, with naval bombardment from the schooner Nautilus, the sloop-of-war Hornet, and the brig Argus. Among the force were 90 men from the Barbary States and eight U.S. Marines 1. This daring raid demonstrated the fledgling United States Marine Corps’ dauntless courage and remains a celebrated episode in the history of America’s first overseas military operations 2. Lieutenant O’Bannon’s hoisting of the star-spangled banner over the occupied fort marked the first time the American flag was raised in victory on foreign soil 3
