Walk down River Street just to say you've done it but it's a tourist trap. Locals hang out in City Market. Downtown does not have an open container law so grab a beer and walk around a bit. Just make sure it's in a plastic cup.
This Saturday is supposed to be sunny and a high of 72. Saturday we will be having St. Practice Day. So there will be plenty of drunks walking around in green a week early. If you have some free time and a car this weekend, at Daffin Park is the Savannah St. Patrick's Day Rugby Tournament with about 100 teams from around the country, Canada, Ireland, and England. Fun way to spend the day drinking beer in the sun. Tourney is Saturday and Sunday. At night you'll see plenty of rugby teams downtown drunk off their arse.
Do you need bar or restaurant recs?

Wow this sounds awesome. I will have a rental car so I should be able to get anywhere with relative ease.
And any restaurant/bar recommendations would be more than welcome.
I've been told Savannah is similar to Charleston, which is awesome for me because Charleston is one of my favorite places I've been.

Watch Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil before you go. That will make some of the River Street stuff cooler. I liked it.

It's cold and raining here right now, but will be nice by the weekend.
River Street is not a tourist trap. There are cool places there in addition to the crappy tourist dumps.
For example:
Crab Shack is a good rec. There is one on River Street as well as on Tybee.
Rocks on the Roof on top of the Bohemian. Outdoor rooftop bar. Live music on Friday and Saturday nights.
Bayou Cafe-great live jazz until the wee hours.
Tubby's-food is decent. Sit outdoors and drink. Get Ship Shots for $1 when the ships go by.
Other places:
World of Beer-on Broughton Street It's a chain but the one here has a really good local feel. Live music on the weekends. Not sure about Thursday.
Southbound Brewing Company. Newer local brewery. "Tours" on Saturdays.
Crystal Beer Parlor-good food and beer. Been around since the 20's I think.
Leopolds-ice cream. Really good.
Fort Pulaski-good if you are a history buff.

I will only add that the hotel is the Hyatt Regency Savannah. Don't know how close any of the mentioned places are to me. I will definitely have a car but obviously walking is preferred.

Perfect. Right there on the River. It has what looks like a nice view bar too. I've never been.
Rocks on the Roof is right next door.
You can walk to 90% of the bars and restaurants mentioned.

It's a dirtier, grittier version of Charleston. Which isn't always a bad thing. You got a hell of a lot more dive bars and artistic people than in Charleston.
Check out Pinkie Masters and Chuck's Bar.
