My mother-in-law had to get hers removed so she could get dentures.

Wife had to have hers surgically removed. Not fun.

If that is the case then the surgeon doesn’t know how to manage tissue very well.

Mine are large and only get in the way when eating lemonheads or some small candy to basically choke and die on. 
Good luck trying not to panic when food gets stuck there and you can't move your tongue out of the way.
