Tech Question: Converting transfered Tivo file to a useable file type

I'm looking for some type of freeware that can convert a .tivo file (the file type created when you transfer a Tivo file from your machine to your PC using the Tivo desktop software) into something you can actually do something with...burn to disc, move to a portable, edit, etc.
I've Googled a couple of options, but most of that is ad crap that's set to look like blogs. Software like Handbrake or Freemake won't do it. I use a Corel video product for video editing and it can't see the Tivo file either.
Anyone familiar with something that will get this done? Thanks in advance.
