since all of my family stays on Netflix, I'm thinking about setting up ROKU instead of giving DTV 100.00 per month for nothing. can someone let me know a few things:

1- can I watch sporting events
2- can I get local channels

I really don't know how this shite works but.....if someone already has this, please enlighten me. I'm old. thanks in advance.

You're shite out of luck when it comes to sporting events.

Get a digital antenna if you want crystal clear HD local channels. I installed one, and it gave me about 30 local channels...some being duplicates and Spanish language channels that I won't watch.

You would need to login to the Watch ESPN app which requires having a cable subscription... or you could borrow someone elses if they'll let you.

You should read more about this topic on the Tech Board.

You can watch sporting events on the ESPN tab. More games than you want, like Slippery Rock vs Mercyhurst U women's lacrosse.

No you can't get local channels.

I don't know why your family being on Netflix matters. Roku is just another conduit for Netflix and other video streaming companies. It doesn't have it's own content.

I only got it to watch LSU baseball.

No. Do you have a friend or family member that would let you use their login info? You go to the ESPN app and it will redirect you to a page where you select your cable TV provider. Then it takes you to the provider's website where you must login to that account. After you login it will let you use the Watch ESPN app.

Start here: Cutting the cord thread and then you can browse a number of other threads on the Tech Board about this subject.

Something like Roku is good because it allows for better streaming most of the time. My Samsung TV has a lot of lag issues when trying to stream Netflix. My Roku doesn't have that problem.

I read some of that thread and got lost quick. I'm an old fellow who doesn't have a clue about all the terminology such as kodi, roku, etc.....

my friend just got roku and I thought that I could save money by getting it as well. my only concern was the sporting events. thanks

You could do this ^^^^^...

Well as long as you have someone's login info you can watch all the ESPN and SEC Network broadcasts using the Watch ESPN app.

...or this ^^^^^^...

If you want to be a dishonest frick. How about you simply pay for your own shite instead of always trying to cheat/game the system?

I made this move 6 months ago with a Roku 3. I subscribed to Sling Tv and it has all of the ESPN channels available. This also gives you access to Watch ESPN.

It does stream well, but so does the PS3. My only trouble with my smart tv is it's positioning around corners and walls.

Unless he has a login for a cable subscriber, all he'll be able to watch is bullshite like women's lacrosse. Have someone re-read his original post to you.

Basically, it's a supplement only.

It streams Netflix and HBOgo(need hbo subscription) and some other crappy "channels."

You get many sporting events that don't get shown on regular ESPN channels but you need a cable/satellite subscription to be able to sign in for that espn service.
