There's no big advancement that I expected to happen that has not happened.
Conversely, there isn't much that has happened that has really surprised me. When I first heard about the Internet in 1994, I knew it would suck, and would kind of ruin computers for us nerds who already used them, and would just generally drag soy-ciety down.
I guess you could point to cell phones like the ones we have now as a surprise. Palm Pilots, Newtons, etc. were all so crappy that when I heard about the "cool new touchscreen Apple phone!" I probably just rolled my eyes.
