I was at the drive up window at a local Pharmacy and noticed the ac units on raised platforms. Seems to me it would be a lot cheaper and easier to put the unit on the ground and just run the duct work up the side of the building. That had to be a job to set and to service. This is not a flood area.

Nothing to do with cost. They are up high to deter thievery.

Point remains, would have been easier to put it on roof. Platform weird.

Roof may not have the type of structural integrity needed to support the weight. That, or they didn't want to hire a crane, when they could just weld some tubed steel together and use a fork lift.

Are those actually serving the pharmacy? Looks like a warehouse. Yeah that would suck to change out one of those compressors. From a ladder. Looks like those were added after that building was built. I agree with everybody else about theft deterrence. But to be honest, a motivated crackhead with a ladder and some bolt cutters could scavenge everything in those units in half an hour.
