re: Prayers Needed from the OT Community *Update Page 25*
I have been following this thread since you first posted it, and have been hesitant to comment, but something this morning made me feel like I needed to.

I know saying I'm sorry and telling you that you and your wife are in my thoughts and prayers, won't help very much in just reading the words, but I do hope you feel the love and support of all of our thoughts and prayers from across the country and world.

My wife and I lost twin boys earlier this year - stillborn at 33 weeks - and we have been completely devastated. Because they were identical twins we were seeing a specialist as well as the regular OB. Saw the specialist on Monday, all was good. Saw the OB on Thursday, he said all was good. On Saturday afternoon she realized she hadn't felt them move for a while. Went to the hospital and no heartbeat from either boy. Admitted, induced, delivered two amazing little boys that from all appearances were perfect except no heartbeat and not breathing. All of the blood tests, all of the placental genetic testing was normal, so we have no idea what happened.

I know how much our hearts hurt, how much our world has been torn apart, by two little boys who never got to draw a breath. I cannot fathom losing a child that you have seen healthy and growing and then have ripped away.

I saw that you said that you will be doing grief counseling. That's good. I don't think the hurt will ever go away, but you will learn how to cope and how to manage it, how to identify it and how to direct it and not let it consume you.

Unfortunately there are a lot of people out there who deal wit this. Until you experience it, you do not realize how many people have dealt with miscarriage, stillbirth and infant/child loss. There are a lot of organizations out there that try to help. We have been introduced to Molly Bears, Rachel's Gift and others. See if there is a group like this in your area. Being able to talk to others who have gone through this may help. It may not, but at least there is a community of those who know the pain you are feeling.

STOP THIS WAY OF THINKING, REDSTICK. Of course you would always do what is right for your child. You did. You sought care from someplace that should have been qualified to treat him.

The land of "What if" is the worst place any of us could ever go. It is the direct path to hell itself. Stay away from it. None of the blame for this falls anywhere near you or your wife.

Agreed. In the days and weeks after losing our twins, I kept going back to our last OB appointment. One of the heart rates was about 20 BPM faster than it had been for the last month or so. The doctor said everything looked good, so we didn't question it. I kept thinking if only I had said something, if only I had said that didn't seem "normal" for him.

That's the way we men are wired. We are the protectors, we are the fixers. You can go back and relive that over and over again asking what if, how could I have done things differently. But that will only lead to more pain and heartbreak.

Tiger Doc, I had the same thoughts about the insulin. Also concerned that the clinic advertising says they have students from some type of medical training school working at the clinic. THIS really sets off alarms!!! Did a look up: Remington, Brightwood College students train at the facility. Hopefully the students are not staffing the facility with the doctor, this can be done if they are working under the MD. This is very alarming!!!

Nurse, considering how the IV was completely covered with what appeared to be a coban wrap (actually his entire forearm and most of the hand was covered) how would one determine latency of the line with an IV flush. If enough fluid had already infiltrated, the flush may have been very easy and would give no indication as to whether the IV was good or not. If there was no infiltration, how would one see the wheal produced when attempting to flush the line? I’m having trouble finding anything right with the entire scenario.

Nurse, I get the feeling that the staff other than the doctor did not have much medical training/experience.

Red stick, I know you said you went through all of the paperwork. Was the documentation signed by medical staff attending your son, other than the doctor, and were their credentials placed after their name, i.e., RN, LPN, NA, MA? I’m sure the doctor would have signed using MD as his credential.

Pretty little boy! Very sorry this happened. No words.

I agree with ERDOC’s statement.

Stay Strong!

Prayers sent for you and your family.

Reading the thread is scary as I sit here in the hospital with my son.

Thought that was you. Great community over there, not sure if you shared your story over there yet. But if not, you should. So many prayers for you and your family. There are literally no words, as I am a father to two boys under 4. May y’all find peace

We had a late term miscarriage in 2015.

Being our first child, we spent every minute talking about names, hair color, what hobbies the kid will take up, etc. We planned and weirdly life a life him it felt like without even being born. I still see him years later in my mind but he never really existed in a sense.

The hardest part for me was shaking this sadness I felt for him not being able to experience life.

Sorry you guys have to deal with such a heartache.

Red, so very sorry for your lost. My heart hurts for you brother! I can't even begin to imagine what you are going through.

I was an ER nurse for quite some time...the thing that stands out the most to me is:

1. The size of the IV bag used. We would NEVER hang a full liter bag on any pediatric patient...NEVER.

2. The IV line is not on any pump. Anytime we would hang fluids for a pediatric patient, it would ALWAYS have to be on a pump...ALWAYS!

3. We would NEVER use a pressure bag on a pediatric patient.

From the 3 things listed above, I'd go so far as to say that I'd seriously question the possibility of acute heart failure from fluid overload (hypervolemia). Basically the heart/circulatory system being overloaded with fluid and can't keep up, so the heart stops pumping (asystole). I'm by no means saying this is what happened, but from what I gathered...it seems like a valid possibility.

Glorious. I received today a $9K bill from the ER where my son arrived already deceased. Insurance covered 75% of it.

ETA - Sorry 80% of it which is normal. WTF did they do for my child though? Continue life support? frick frick I WANT TO BREAK DOWN A BUILDING frick.

Instead of answers or a body to lay to rest I have a bill. This world is messed up.

That is absurd. You need to call them.
