It had already changed to Shell the day that Shell and Saudi Arabia split the sheets. Only Port Arthur remained Motiva.
Pipelines connecting to nearby petrochemicals is a hop skip and a jump from Convent. Not being part of a complex had zip to do with it.
20+ years ago, Shell Chemical (not oil) bought the refinery in Saraland (Mobile) from Louisiana Land and Exploration, the refinery in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico from Sun Oil, and the former Enjet refinery in St. Rose, LA for the naphtha feedstock for its ethylene cracker at Norco due the rising cost of NGL's as feedstock. NGL's became plentiful and cheap with all the wet gas from places like Eagle Ford, so Yabucoa was shutdown, then St Rose shutdown, and recently Saraland sold to a company planning to turn it into a green diesel plant. Saraland was forced to use hydrocracker reactors for its ULSD project which had been sitting in Japan since around 1990 after a hydrocracker project in CA was cancelled. Those have a nigh enough pressure rating (more than needed for ULSD) to be used in the Ecofining process to turn used fry oil, animal fat and/or vegetable oil into green diesel.

Mereaux refinery was originally Ingram Oil (same as the barge company) which was also involved in oil well deals at the mouth of the Mississippi River and involved with Charley Murphy and Shell Oil. Shell supplied the oil to the refinery for the most part initially. Ingram got out of refining by selling that one to Murphy and the larger one in Wood River, IL (across from St. Louis) to Shell Oil. The Wood River refinery was later sold to Phillips
Ever deal with Plaquemine Parish officials? Chicago is not nearly as corrupt. I had people interested in the former ethanol plant adjacent to it for other purposes until they heard Plaquemine Parish. They were salivating at such a prime location, the corruption there is well known globally.
