<----Non-smoker

For OT-ers that smoke or have smoked, how detrimental is/was smoking on your immune system? A coworker of mine is always slightly under the weather. She'll have cough, to be expected, but she's always getting sick and looks strung out.

Is this normal? Were you susceptible to getting sick more? For those that have quit, did your immune system skyrocket over a noticeable period of time?

It is poison for your body. Habitual smokers have tons of other health issues and it absolutely weakens their immune systems.

The answer to your questions is a definitive yes.

Back when I smoked I was guaranteed to get a cold or two a year, no that I have quit I haven't been sick in over 4 years. So yeah it makes a big difference on your immune system!

Smoking cigs is trashy as frick - AND it wrecks your health - chronically and ultimately permanently.

Now, everybody is going to die. But should you pay for an accelerated, nasty, agonizing pathway to the undertaker?

<- Never smoked but has lost plenty of family to it.

I only drink during football season and subsequently I smoke as well. Well I was smoking and drinking outside in the freezing cold some nights and I ended up with an bronchitis that turned into pneumonia because I let it go untreated for a month. I also got a cold sore from my daughter that got it from daycare

I quit 4 years ago, and my overall health is ok, but I did take on High Blood Pressure, Bad Anxiety and weight gain that is hard to lose. But I can breath a lot better. I am starting to finally shed some weight though.

High Blood Pressure

Nicotine is a pretty powerful stimulant. You may have damaged your cardiovascular system. Quitting smoking, past the initial withdrawal period, should have an overall positive effect on your blood pressure.

Bad Anxiety

Withdrawal, again. The only anxiety that smoking helps with is the anxiety caused by being addicted to smoking.

weight gain

Now, this is true - because most folks replace smoking with eating, and there is this whole deal of a stimulant boosted metabolism. So, that is a common (actual) side effect of smoking, but generally going to be better for you long term, as you can lose the weight.

You can't lose the immediate, permanent damage caused by every puff of every cig.

I've never been hospitalized for an illness or missed a considerable amount of time from work. Last week I had a thorough physical exam done by the doc so I could renew my CDL's and he found no problems, blood pressure in a normal range. I've smoked for 20+ years.

I wonder if this is applicable to alcohol use as well? Blood pressure, anxiety, weight gain...

Not entirely sure, but it seems like I get colds a little less often since I quit. Definitely breathe easier. I guess the issue is really sinus infections when you smoke regularly. I think that's probably the main thing.

I smoked for almost 20 years, quit a little over a year ago. I got the occasional cold, but only have been really sick (flu, pneumonia, ect) once or twice in my life.

Smoking almost literally hurts every part of your body in one way or Another.

But chronic smoking and ruin parts of your immune system in your lungs, making you more prone to mucous collection and infections that a healthy person would a) be able to take care or and/or b) be able to pass and cough up
