Need more facts could be a copy right issue. Could also be a non-compete clause issue if they signed one.

We need more info.....I know a fairly considerable amount of IP law too.

As a couple have noted, it's two separate questions. First, can I use the photo? If the photographer kept the rights, the answer is probably yes, assuming you have the permission of the photog. If the photog didn't, the answer is no.

Second question, Can I do the "work" I was doing before I left at my new company? Much tougher question. Using Company No. 1 photos will make it more likely they will complain so I would advise not to regardless. Second, noncompete? Is the "work" confidential or is it something that goes on a website for public consumption for example? Will friend use Company No.1 information to do the work at her new shop?

No easy answers here...
