Can't imagine doing all the effort of med school and particularly all four parts of the USMLE to never use any of it. Are these individuals at least going to do some sort of preliminary year of training in order to be licensed to practice (all you technically need is one year of post graduate training).?

No they aren't. Part of bschool is it allows you to transition to different roles regardless of background. Right now, they have offers from top I banks and consulting firms, etc. Not to mention making 200K/year sounds appealing given the debt loads vs going being a resident working as hard or harder for a fraction of the money. Additionally, their recruiting pipeline will be gone for those jobs.

That said, having an MD from a top school will carry a lot of weight with consulting firms, health care banking groups, and even hedge funds. Their knowledge base will be very valued, especially when it comes to anything biotech related.

Don't do it. There's a very good chance you would be wasting a year of your life. It's a non-factor in residency. If you finish residency and you feel that administration is your calling (not a common sentiment) then take the necessary courses. Administrators make loads more money but lose their skills and distance themselves from the actual practice of medicine every year they are not working in the trenches. I've seen several instances of a respected white coat morphing into "a suit" and every time it's depressing.
