Let me start by saying I have been an operator in a union plant for going on 18 years. I can only speak to my job at my location and the experiences that I have encountered in my 18 years. But since you are speaking in superlatives I will I will go ahead and say you are wrong.

quote:

4 hrs call in time

I have never heard of this. Doesn't exist at this union facility.

quote:

And definitely don't forget about collusion between friends on opposite shifts. "I'll lay out on 4th day and let them call you in and we swap that next rotation". It's disgusting what they get away with for the actual work they do.

I won't go as far as to say that this NEVER happens, BUT in my 18 years I have seen it maybe a handful of times. In your post you made it sound like this was a weekly occurrence. It's flat misleading.

And this happens a LOT! Mike thinks job is so simple/easy/laid back, but the divorce rate is extremely high for us shift workers. We work at least half the weekends in a year. We work many holidays. We work lots of nights. When we work a turnaround our families feel like we have abandoned them. Our wives spend a fair amount of time as a single mother because we are at work. This job isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Everything has a price.

Bless your heart. Your wife has a boyfriend or ten. Seriously though if you are going to have a family you need to find a balance. >1000 hrs of OT a year is not a balance.

So you work 4 on 4 off and don't get paid over time(at least 4 hrs extra for call-in) for anything you work when called in? And you don't get 1.5 for holidays?

I don't know anyone working 4 on 4 off, but I am sure it is happening somewhere.

You do get 4hrs minimum if you are called in, but you are expected to stay 4hrs. Of course this doesn't pertain to operators except in rare cases.

Holiday is usually 1.5x, but I would rather be at home getting paid regular time like the salary guys. Of course, if Christmas falls on a weekend it isn't a holiday. So next year most sites will have guys working Christmas day (and New Years) for straight time.

There are also attendance policies that prevent most off the scenarios you speak of.

I won't say the system doesn't get manipulated, but all the ways you have brought up sounds like things that were very site specific or happened in the 80s/90s before HRs destroyed the discipline structure of the unions.

Kids come out of college with engineering degrees and they get that 70k a year job and promised six figures after 2 years. Then they see GED earning operators earning that.

You are obtuse.

Some operators might earn the same as some engineers, BUT the amount of hours that Ops has to work to earn the same amount as an engineer is not even close. Surely, you know that and are just practicing breathing with your mouth open.

You have to work a decent amount of weekends to reach the 1000hr mark working straight days.

Very true. A good ChemE is at six figures the day they hire in (possibly more). Their work load is high and they do work OT, but no where close to hours to equal out.

Just working 1 six week turnaround is 300hrs OT and u still have 10.5 months leftover... Hit 2 a year and u can get to 600 OT and not work any OT for 9 of the 12 months of the year.... I've worked 3.

Not many plants are shutting down 3x a year on a habitual basis, especially not for 6 weeks at a clip.

No joke. Management needs some fricking help if they are bringing down units that long that often.

Unless it is a huge site.

Not too mention, frick working three turnarounds a year. I would be divorced after 9 months.
