I'm currently an instructor pilot in the AF for Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT). The AF is facing a pilot retention problem that is going to get worse before it gets better. The AF's answer is to increase pilot production. If your son has any interest in being a pilot, or even more so a fighter pilot, the getting is good right in the AF. It is a ten year commitment after your wings, so he needs to be prepared for that.
One thing to consider about the Marines is that they are Marines first, aviators second. I've seen guys get non flying gigs faster than they would in the AF for that reason alone.
