The long planned Allied Offensive in North Africa - Operation Crusader - begins, but the Allies are worrying about how to defend Singapore in case of Japanese aggression. The Germans renew their drive on Moscow, but their number one flying ace perishes, a major PR hit.

We were not in the fight for North Africa just yet. If anything Crusader is another example of the seesaw nature of the North Africa front. One side launches an offensive, over extends their line of communication, gets beaten back in a counteroffensive, everything goes back to basically where they stated. Rinse & repeat, or at least until Monty whipped Rommel at El Alamein and American forces started to to be felt to the west.

If the Japanese opened a second front in the east, Germany could have taken Moscow and eventually Russia.

That and the Japanese were given a black eye by the Red Army in Mongolia just one day before Germany invaded Poland.

Very true. And that showed Japan’s fatal flaw when it came to fighting the Soviets. That flaw is Japan’s army was very similar to that of France in that it was structured to fight WWI all over again. Japan was ill prepared to fight a modern combined arms conflict. This fact was hidden in the Pacific and South East Asia due to the nature of these theaters of war where combined arms mechanized warfare was all but impossible. But on the vast, wide open expanses of Mongolia the Japanese were out of their league.
