I get it, but when people refer to decades, they typically do so by saying the 80s or 90's. Those references start with the 1980-1989, etc.

It's a social reference, not something that is otherwise significant.

Still waiting for mathematical proof that we should start at year zero. A calendar is just man made conception of Earth's rotation and orbit around the sun.

Theoretically it is possible to start at year zero but we can't observe it.

Thus back to my original question. Zero the very first decade didn't begin until after some unit of measurement that > zero.
