Two different playing parameters:
LSU Does a decent job considering lack of funding by the state - actually it is an embarrassment that the state's "flagship" school is so poorly funded.
Absolutely agree, but they do not need the same things being offered at every small local university including LaTech. LSU as a stand alone university, not including the system schools, should get a higher percentage of the total higher education budget than universities in the University of Louisiana budget. LSU specifically the main campus and all of the post undergrad programs that are LSU take high percentages from all areas of the state, Every other state university including LaTech, ULL, and UNO will forever be regional/local universities. When ULL starts getting large numbers of international students then maybe dicuss

You have to include a New Orleans presence in the discussion and UL-L would need to be in the discussion and as well. The rest of the Louisiana's universities should be severely limited or shut down.
New Orleans is a fairly large city nationally. But still even then a majority of the students that graduate high school each year from NOLA will attend LSU. Sure plenty of kids go out of state or to private universities in families that can afford it, but its not a huge number. LSU is only an hour away from New Orleans, many cities with much higher populations do not have a major state university within its immediate city limits, and they always will have well known larger private universities.
The quality of the education in the LSU system suffers because the state has to support so many like Grambling, SUNO, and UNO to name a few. Even Nichols, though they I believe have some unique programs in the state only found there, to where it would not be easier to move those programs to Baton Rouge or merge schools all over.

Williams went to W&L law school. May have gone to LSU undergrad but I cannot remember.
He did graduate from LSU undergrad. He's also a rags to riches story.
