I’ve flown with a couple of those astro baws. They smart but they ain’t head and shoulders above most. Weirdest, and some of the funniest I’ve flown with are flight test guys. Broad spectrum, either the coolest or the biggest nerds.

Speaking as a PhD Physicist...
If the Kid wants to do MechE, he should get a Masters in that.
If he is really bright and wants to be able to do anything, he should continue in physics. But he should be warned that it is a lot of hard work.
