No such thing as a negligible tax

Ok.

So let's go through this.

Let's say I dont deal with anything on lower Manhattan. My broker isn't there. My traders are in NJ. My lawyers somewhere else.

I do not use a single thing out of lower Manhattan.

How will I be altered by this $9 surcharge?

I drive through, no charge. I take public transit in, no charge. I walk in, no charge. I get dropped off by Uber, negligible (less than 5% charge).

I hope you don't have to present facts. Because you seem really passionate, but all of your concerns are already addressed and squashed.

You got laughed out of that thread when you tried to claim places like paris and prague were clean

You’ve advocated for use taxes quite a bit. Don’t turn tail now.

I sure didn’t. When you said it’s cleaner than all big cities and I asked you how could you say it’s cleaner than Copenhagen you didn’t have an answer. People disagreed with me about Rome.

Imagine addressed and squashed means making a strawman argument then getting confused about the definition of said argument.

What’s wrong with that? You’ve argued vociferously for use taxes that affect the poorest the most.

How the frick is it a strawman argument?

You said there are all these poor people driving into lower Manhattan and there just aren't. And those that are have ways to not pay.

Because this is not what I said. You don’t have much of a talent for forming a coherent argument so you changed what I was saying then attacked the exaggerated and new premise.

Keep up man, I don’t have time to explain basic phrases to you.

Alright, so crawfish.

You think this is really going to keep poor people from commuting to lower Manhattan?

Just put a guess, how many poor people you think are commuting from Queens and LI via every day?

What's wrong with that is the supporters are pretending it isn't true.

Every tax affects the poor the most. No matter what you think happens, or what the tax purports to do, the poor are always the most affected. There are no other options.

I absolutely 100% support consumption taxes over compulsory taxes.

This is more of an excise tax, similar to tobacco taxes which have been enacted to cause usage of the item being taxed to decrease.

I fully oppose such taxes. I'm sure there's some situation where I might support them, but I haven't come across that yet.

Daughter lives in Manhattan. Appreciate the grind but do leave with $200+ in parking or traffic fees every time I visit.

I saw an article where the city is purposely narrowing the roads with barriers, bike lanes and other BS.

Why?

We spend billions and billions on healthcare for problems that can be linked to smoking and drinking. Shouldn't people who partake in that carry more of that weight?

Because it is nothing more than government intervention into to the market.

No, we shouldn't be spending that money at all. Everyone knows the risks. Let them deal with their own decisions.

Regardless, that doesn't address the issue of excise taxes for things like diamonds, this stupid driving into Manhattan tax, the various excise taxes added by Obamacare, cannabis taxes, fuel and airfare taxes, the list goes on and on.

That's any sales tax.

But in reality, we do. And that is NEVER stopping. I don't have a problem with users of harmful things carrying a heavier burden than non-users.

I just don't see a fundamental difference between this and other sales taxes. The the pro-sales tax people in those previous threads on the topic even said that poor people should just consume less to avoid increased sales taxes. Same thing here, right? Just don't buy diamonds if you don't want to pay the extra tax.
