My Grandfather spent most of his time in WW2 in North Africa.

He hated Africa the rest of his days.

He was 101st. He didn't start talking about war stuff till my brother died a few years ago and when he understood what I was doing as a contractor over there he told me about how they used to have to kick in doors and how he hated it but how often they found SS holding kids captive to fight for the Nazis.

Granted he was all of barely out of teenage years at the time. Different time and place..

Damn, I'd have loved to sit down and talk to your grandpa for a few hours. I wish I knew more about my grandpa but he died three years before I was born. About all I know of hhs wartime service is he was a Tanker and he was in the 4th Armor. I do think it's pretty cool there's a chance our grandfathers may have encountered each other in the biggest battle in American history.

I'm guessing he was in the Army Air Corps then? Probably 12th Air Force?

He had 4 brothers that were all in at the same time. One died in Bastogne and one got killed when a shot up Mustang landed on their barracks one night. Freak accident.

Holy hell. Sounds a lot like my great uncles.

Had one who was a grunt in Europe, he died when I was little. All I know is he lost a leg. I'm guessing to a mine.

Had another who was an engineer in Europe. He lived until I was about 12. We'd sit and watch ABC World News Tonight and then talk politics and history. I loved him like a father.

Another one was a SeaBee in the Pacific. He lived in Orlando Florida and we'd go spend a few weeks every summer with him and his wife. He had all kinds of wild stories he'd tell me and my brother. I remember one where he talked about fighters coming in and landing only for them to find the pilot inside had his head blown off. This very much impressed 5 year old me.

Then there was my grandfather on my dad's side. He was a radio man on a tin can in the Pacific. He never really said too much.

That's what my grandfather did.

I guess army air corps because you said he spent most of the war in North Africa.

Once the fighting was over there in 1943, all the ground forces were used either in Sicily, Italy or sent to Britain to prepare for Overlord. The main unit that stayed in North Africa was the 12th Air Force, which at that time was part of the Army since the Air Force did not exist as a seperate branch of the military yet.

He went to Italy after being in N. Africa. I think he enjoyed Italy. He was not fond of N. Africa.

Next time you cross over you should ask him about it. Ask for Jimmy from Memphis.

Ah, he had to be in the 1st Armored Div then. That's a proud division (or at least it was before it was deactivated a few years ago). I was in 1AD when I went to the Sandbox in 1990.

One of the coolest stories he ever told me was one night somewhere when a Kraut landed on an airbase they were staying at and the dude was wearing Bermuda shorts flying a jet plane and landed and begged for forgiveness.
