Word is he was wearing a life vest, but not properly secured. Slipped through it.
I worked on the river. Once you go over, even with a vest, your chances aren’t great. Especially around barges.
Watched a man go over once, with a vest.
Current sucked him under the barge. By the time he came out on the other side he was already dead.
The river doesn’t have any mercy. God rest his soul.

I was shoved into the hill below Star Fleet when the Natalie Jean sank in March. She went down in seconds. The current was so fast we had debris floating past us two minutes later.

People who’ve never really been on the river just don’t comprehend the raw power and the very real danger that exists. It’s one thing to watch it from the levee. The barges seem so slow and harmless.
It’s not until you see one rip loose from its mooring that you comprehend the forces that lie just beneath the surface. Steel cables as big as your wrist snapping like threads. Half inch steel ripped as if it were paper. A barge as large as a football field sinking below that muddy water in a matter of moments.
It’s humbling.

A lot of boats closing their water tight doors now that previously let it slide.
In the queue at Calcasieu Locks. 0530 comes early. Already in the rack. G'nite all.
