Reading the thread about the dog that died and I wonder why animals have different life spans? Rhetorical I would imagine.

Why do dogs get gray hair around 8 and die about 12 years? (Average)

Why do some whales live to be 200 years old?

Why does a housefly only live about 28 days?

Do cells of different animals function more efficiently than others?

Why do some animals just age and die faster than others?

Why are some threads legendary while others just suck?

Because the Universe is a cold, dark place and there is no God. Satisfied?

All creatures are born with a certain number of telomeres. Once they run out, it dies. Or something like that.

ETA: They get shorter when the cells divide. As they get shorter, you age more. I actually don't know what causes natural death. I don't think anyone actually knows. We understand a lot about cellular structure and what causes them to die but we don't understand why and when.

The DNA damage theory makes most sense to me. The ability of a creature to repair its DNA would determine the lifespan.
