Accounting major here. Been working government audit for almost 3 years now. Currently studying for CPA. Not sure if you have wife and kids, but if you don't, I'd recommend pursuing the CPA before you have a family. About 100 hours of study time per exam is recommended.
As far as interviews go, just be yourself and don't bullshite your answers. That way it'll be a good fit for you and whoever hires you. Just my opinion anyway.
