Just had first accounting intern interview
Posted by Odysseus32 on 10/1/20 at 12:04 pm571
Made this topic a few months back
Accounting Majors -- Any experiences here?
Just had my first interview over zoom for a tax season internship. Not a bad meeting, way more chill than I thought. They aren't big 4, big 10, anything. Just a local firm in the state. Three guys that asked a bunch of questions.
I don't think I did well, but I managed to answer questions better than I would have for generic, service based, warehouse jobs.
I know, cool story. Just an update as that thread went 7 pages and I got a lot of really good feedback.

You would be amazed at how bad the average person is at interviewing. You probably did better than you think.

Mingo works for H&R Block also. Maybe y’all can play golf together.

Good job, I hate interviewing. I bet you did fine though.

I'm a horrible interviewer too. I freeze mentally and have trouble verbally expressing what is going through my head. All the jobs I've gotten were small group interviews, no more than 2 people at a time.
You're in good(ish) company.

What city is the firm in? You probably did fine. My firm is interviewing today and I’m wondering if you talked to them.

Never mind I see you’re in Idaho. You’re gonna be fine and good choice on going back for accounting. You can pass the CPA exam because I did and I’m a dumbass, but it’s no cake walk. Only about half the people who take it pass it, compared to the bar where like 90% pass.

I hope so. I think I answered the questions as if I was really listening to them, but I was not very smooth. Hard time getting the words to make sense the way they sound in my head.

Thanks, I hope so. I doubt I will get it, as I am early in my coursework, but it was good practice.

Yep. It was a single guy at first and then 2 other people came in mid-interview. I wasn't too rattled but would have definitely preferred a one on one.

I'll just say it was in northern Idaho.

lol he gave, what seems like to me, good advice in my last thread. Although I think some arguments broke out.

If your grades are decent, I wouldn't sweat the interview too much for a tax season internship. Most firms are desperate enough for warm bodies, the interview is just to make sure you exist and can communicate at an elementary level.

4.0 since I've been back. Of course with the disaster of my freshman semester at southeastern where I literally stopped going and moved back to cenla halfway through, my cum GPA is 3.4.

I don't mind being interviewed. But I hate conducting interviews. Or more specifically, having to work together with people that treat the process like a life or death choice.

Agree, I hired someone last year who couldn't put two sentences together (Nervous) and he's turned out to be a good one.
All about background, experience and gut for me.

I know you can't come out and just say it because it shows a lack of grace, but I routinely hinted at this throughout the interview.
I want so badly to be like "I promise it's gonna turn out well if you hire me. I'm gonna work my arse off and I have goals."

lol I know this is a riff at public accounting, but I've been at the bottom for a while with no direction.
Doing work that I see as interesting making $45k sounds like a dream.

I would hate to compare myself to the average person. Such a low bar
re: Just had first accounting intern interviewPosted by GRTiger on 10/1/20 at 12:57 pm to Odysseus32
For interns, the interview is mostly to make sure you aren't a spaz/weird that wouldn't fit in with the team, with a little bit of specific knowledge to make sure you aren't a fry cook lying on your resume.
I wouldn't sweat it if you had trouble answering some technical questions as long as you answered some decently well. If you think you did bad because you are/were weird, well, stop that.
Good luck.
eta:
A 3 person panel for an intern interview is excessive, btw. You should be ready for anything I guess, but I don't blame you for not expecting that.
