Could you imagine if they forgot to burry him or worse yet lost his body?

He was buried at Arlington. That's why it took so long. There's a several months long waiting list.
Yep. It also isn't just the number of people, it is partly because they can't/don't just go dig a hole as needed. They have to survey the land, determine the exact location, prepare the headstone, etc. And they have to schedule it around all of the other stuff going on around there - when was the last time you took a tour and actually saw a ceremony taking place? Or have you ever seen equipment out there digging a grave?

From what I understand most people who are buried there are first cremated then later their ashes are what's buried.

When I worked for a funeral home they sent a couple of guys to Arlington. Both of them just stayed upstairs in the storage room. In Louisiana, as in most states, once a body is embalmed you can take all the time you need. The embalming process halts (for the most part) decomposition and there is no need for cold storage or anything like that.

Our local funeral kept him in their 'freezer'. Then they transported him to the nearest military airfield for transport to DC. Once there, a 2nd funeral home picked him up, and kept him until they transported him to Arlington the day of the burial. It took another 4 months to get his headstone placed

It's an extremely solemn but awe inspiring ceremony. You've had time to deal with the grief while waiting for burial, so the honors bestowed brings such overwhelming feeling of pride, that you leave a spiritual lift. It's just an odd juxtaposition of emotions.

On two different trips to Arlington I witnessed burial ceremonies, one was for a 3 star general. It was an extremely moving experience. The general had a horse drawn cason and a 21 gun salute. Again, an amazing, moving experience.

He was not going to buried until Katherine Johnson said the numbers were good.
