University I'm applying to requires a statement of contributions to diversity in the classroom, new student recruiting etc. Most of these statements are around 2 pages. I don't even know where to start with this bullshite. So, I figured the best most appropriate place to come for advice on this was the OT.
This is a VERY shitty attitude to have if you're trying to get a job in academia. You're going to be teaching classes full of people with different backgrounds, and they want to know how you would handle such an atmosphere.

You're glad that you didn't get into a Top 10 law school?

Tell them you went to football games at College Station, Fayetteville this year and you plan to go to Starkville and Tuscaloosa next year. #hired

How I handle such a situation is I stand up in front of my class and do my job; teach. I don't give a damn what the audience looks like. They could all be purple and it wouldn't bother me. What bothers me is having to write some bullshite like this. It's not my job as a professor or the universities job to promote/teach diversity. Their job is to educate so that students won't be a bunch of incompetent dumb fricks when they graduate.

Tell 'em you have a low opinion of all humanity and would embrace each and every representative of it with equal disregard and contempt.

Write about how you plan to contribute to an old, old wooden ship used during the Civil War era.

If this is how you feel you should write it, or something similar. If not you are not being honest with yourself you should be ashamed when you look in the mirror.

Ouch! Roomie went to Tulane and owed just under $200K. After 20 years i think he is still paying.
CA places alot of emphasis on diversity. Their CLE requirements include one hour of "increasing the diversity of the Bar", along with ethics.

Yes, your job is to educate, but most people understand that every person--professors and students--brings their own background into the classroom. And that brings with it different opinions, expectations, and notions of what is "obvious" and what is common sense." All they really want to hear in the diversity statement is that you realize this. Maybe think of a time you taught some kid from an underprivileged background who surprised you with his perspective in some way, and incorporate that anecdote into the statement.
The diversity statement isn't meant to be political; the committee just wants to see if you can effectively deal with students different than you, taking into consideration that their perspective is different from your own, without alienating them.
Teaching isn't just about delivering facts and information; you also have to deal with whole persons.

I guess I could talk about my one friend who is a tree hugger. I taught him the error of his ways.
