When I was in the Airforce I was told by someone near the top of the chain of command that what we the public see is about a generation behind what we actually have. Not sure how much truth there is to that these days with everyone having cameras but it certainly makes sense since planes like SR-71 or B-2 were flying long before we the people knew.

Yep. Kelly Johnson & Co. were building the F-117 mere miles away from the Star Wars set in the late 70's.
It's not crazy to think we have some insane hypersonic platforms to be rolled out in the next decade or so. And some wicked things already in orbit.

I know the govt just purchased more land around area 51 so my guess would be hypersonic as you said. The land grab would indicate a craft that needs more run-out room.

The air force jet shuttle plane is pretty cool. To be honest, if you ever get a chance to see the F-22 at an air show, definitely do it. The damn thing doesn't fly like a normal plane. The thrust vectoring and sheer power lets it do things at low speed that you really can't see in any other plane we have.

Saw an F-22 at an airshow at Lackland AFB and you're right that freakin thing can do things I never thought was possible for a jet. It did a hover maneuver directly above us.
