re: How to listen to spy radio broadcasts right now

The shortwave hobby is in trouble for us in the USA. Main reason is that hardly any country has English language programming that is not Christian programming.
Radio Havana Cuba still has an old-style Cold War type of English programming, but, it's very tame Cold War style compared to the old Soviet Union.

Voice of Russia is available on line, as is the BBC. The BBC no longer beams english programming to the USA, neither does Netherlands.

Ukraine used to broadcast in english to the USA. After Obama became POTUS, that ended abruptly. You will have a tough time finding anything in english even on Ukraine Radios website.

Well, what about AM radio? Used to be, at night time, you could hear those 50 thousand watt stations all over. Not anymore since most of them broadcast with a new kind of hybrid signal called IBOC.

So, this is really a fringe hobby that seems to be dying to me. It was more fun when I lived near New York City because there were more AM and shortwave signals to catch.

For us here in La. we can still have fun catching Radio Havana Cuba and for spy stuff fun, the numbers codes broadcast by Cuba to their agents in the USA.

I often wish that North Korea and Iran would shortwave broadcast anti-US english programming to us so that we could have more fun listening to that kind of crazy stuff. Those bastards have decided to deprive us all of even this little courtesy.

Shortwave has lots of interesting things to listen to. Plenty of it is moving to DRM or other digital modes, so its becoming more impossible to eavesdrop, but there are still plain language stations there. Like Champagne said, a majority of the english stations now are religious, so you can hear the bible world wide.

Other areas of interest would be the military frequencies, those are usually between 6mhz and 10mhz. You'll hear the EAM tests and stuff like that.

There are also the frequencies of the transatlantic airlines, usually out of like JFK or eastern major airports.

You can decode WEFAX images from the ship to shore weather stations out of Mobile easily here in La. Also, you can hear the shortwave channels used by the fleets in the Gulf and on a good night, up the east coast and up the west coast. Just depends on conditions.

A good source I use is the HF Underground that has frequencies and news. Also, the Reddit group /r/shortwave has plenty of information.

Also, there are plenty of online tuners available, this one is pretty good and free: GlobalTuners.

So, plenty of stuff to listen to on a nightly basis, but not quite like the old days of the 9v transistor radio, hearing Mexican stations at the bottom of the AM band.

TL;DR Shortwave is pretty much still alive.

I wish they listed these stations so you can attempt to rule them out.
