Rule of thumb for all commodities, including insurance:
If people are beating down my door trying to sell it to me, it is shite.
If I have to beat down other peoples' door to get it, it's worth having.

what does this mean?.
It means that in year one of the insured dies the payout will only be the premiums paid to that point. In year two the payout will be a percentage (usually 25%-50%) of the total death benefit. After year two of the insured dies then the entire death benefit is paid.
That is sensible for some people in the right circumstances but not all.
