Take your thumbnail and scratch a small piece of the bark off near the ground. If it's green underneath, it is alive. I would still leave it alone and see what happens. Sometimes they fool you and sprout up from the root. Good luck.
Also, you did not say if it was an annual or perennial. If it's an annual, more than likely it is done.
