As an addendum, average Chinese soldier is far different than the folks at Tiananmen Square in 1989. They have access to a lot more information that the government would prefer they not have and they may be more loathe to fire on fellow citizens.

It's a booming economy with Western leaning culture, rights and sensibilities. Hong Kong the Island is within spitting distance of Mainland China which allows a side by side comparison which doesn't make the cinched up Communist Chinese look too good.
